(download Insidious: Chapter 2 movie) - The challenge involved in making a direct horror sequel like INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2 is that it’s harder to mystify and scare both audiences and the characters the second time around. Fortunately, returning director James Wan and screenwriter Leigh Whannell have partially changed the source of the terror for CHAPTER 2, though it takes the film a little while to get there.

(Insidious: Chapter 2 download) - Although INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2 follows up directly from the final scene of its surprise-hit predecessor, that’s not where it starts. The opening scene takes us back to 1986, where we encounter spook-plagued Josh Lambert as a boy (Garrett Ryan). His concerned mother Lorraine (the always welcome Jocelin Donahue, from THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL) calls in parapsychological help that includes Elise Rainier (Lindsay Seim, too obviously dubbed by older-Elise actress Lin Shaye), and odd stuff occurs. Then it’s back to the present day, Lorraine is played by Barbara Hershey and taking Josh (Patrick Wilson), his wife Renai (Rose Byrne) and their kids into her place, Elise is dead and Renai is being questioned about Josh’s possible culpability in that murder.(download Insidious: Chapter 2 )

(watch Insidious: Chapter 2 online) - As those who recall the original’s ending will be aware, it might appear Josh is the culprit, but he’s literally not quite himself. And the Lamberts are still being plagued by other forms of spirit activity, i.e. a piano playing itself, inanimate objects coming to life and strange figures appearing and disappearing in the kids’ rooms. As in the first INSIDIOUS (and this past summer’s THE CONJURING), Wan here demonstrates a proficiency for taking tried-and-true horror elements and elevating them with precise attention to framing and timing, plus the application of composer Joseph Bishara’s string-heavy musical stingers.(download Insidious: Chapter 2 movie)
(Insidious: Chapter 2 download) - The storytelling is a bit more problematic this time, dependent as it is on developing a new mystery now that the particulars of the spirit dimension (a.k.a. “The Further”) are familiar to the principals. With Elise out of the picture, her comic-relief associates Specs (Whannell) and Tucker (Angus Sampson) return, along with middle-aged psychic Carl (Steve Coulter), to investigate a paranormal trail that leads to a creepy abandoned house and a creepier abandoned hospital. (download Insidious: Chapter 2 movie) As this subplot progresses, the exposition gets laid on a little thick, along with other forms of audience hand-holding; Carl drops lettered dice to receive answers from the other side, and every close-up of the revealed words must be accompanied by someone saying it out loud, as if to make sure everyone gets it. And late in the movie, after a nicely shivery visual reveal of what was really going on during that prologue, someone actually turns, almost to the camera, and exclaims, “So that’s what that was about!” It becomes a laugh line the scene doesn’t really need, given that Whannell and Sampson provide sufficient amusement elsewhere.(Insidious: Chapter 2 download)

(download Insidious: Chapter 2) When Wan and Whannell simply allow the visuals to do the talking, as worked so well in the first INSIDIOUS, the sequel generates some of the same shivery tension, and at least one of the memorable spooks from the prior film is cleverly expanded upon here. Yet its strongest moments involve human threats, not ghostly ones, particularly a tense and exciting confrontation between Josh and Carl,(download Insidious: Chapter 2 movie) which rallies the movie for a third act that efficiently and suspensefully crosscuts between the realms of the living and the dead. The change of emphasis in antagonists works; if INSIDIOUS was Wan and Whannell’s modestly budgeted variation on POLTERGEIST, CHAPTER 2 can be seen as their take on THE SHINING.(Insidious: Chapter 2 download)

(watch Insidious: Chapter 2 online) The duo’s approach remains economical in CHAPTER 2, eschewing elaborate digital FX for simple lighting tricks and other atmospherics (though John R. Leonetti’s cinematography occasionally looks a little too much like video, even in shots not seen through Specs’ camcorder). (download Insidious: Chapter 2) Also helping cement the movie in the real world are the performances of the ensemble cast (with Ty Simpkins and Andrew Astor also back as the Lambert sons), once again eliciting familial bonds, warmth and concern in the midst of the escalating terror. Wilson gets to strike some fresh notes and play off our affection for Josh as well as he explores another side of his role, encapsulating what it is the makes the INSIDIOUS films work: the fear that results when the familiar and comforting is invaded by a malignant influence. Malevolent demons never have been known as early adopters of new technology. When you're busy possessing young souls, who has time to drop by the latest Apple product unveil?

The throwback horror genre travels beyond the limits of time and space in "Insidious: Chapter 2," where one evil spirit haunts a family using two tin cans connected with a string. A video cassette recorder and rocking chair horses also fit prominently into the plot. Rarely has a film set in the present day used so many products from the old Sears catalog.

"Saw" co-creator James Wan continues his mission to distance himself from the torture-porn genre, by making scary movies that rely on practical effects, smart direction and an unapologetic first-date-friendly PG-13 sensibility. "Insidious 2" has a few memorable frights, a willing cast and a professional crew behind the camera. But even as it succeeds in the moment, it's hard to get around the fact that the sequel is entirely unnecessary. We'd rather see Wan and his co-conspirators put out something new.(Insidious: Chapter 2 download)

Something like "The Conjuring," the Wan-directed 2013 release that was the biggest unexpected pleasure of the summer movie season. That film, set in the 1970s, was even more retro; capturing the feel of a movie from "The Exorcist" era without seeming like an outright theft.

"Insidious 2" is just more of "Insidious," minus the element of surprise. We're reintroduced to the Lambert family, whose father and eldest son have the ability to "astral project" — entering a limbo-like zone filled with dry ice and angry demons.(download Insidious: Chapter 2) This time, we also learn about Josh Lambert's past, discovering his childhood possession, captured on video that was surprisingly high def for 1986. The cans-on-a-string haunting are part of the fresh hell for eldest son Dalton, and didn't he take enough abuse in the last film?

(download Insidious: Chapter 2) - Fans of the first "Insidious" will walk into the theater knowing 1) Which family member is possessed; and 2) The nature of the supernatural forces. Screenwriter Leigh Whannell tries to compensate by simultaneously adding back story and new drama. But it feels a little like sandwiching a cupcake with two waffles sprinkled with powdered sugar. (download Insidious: Chapter 2) - If "Insidious 2" exists solely because "Insidious 1" made a ton of money, then at least credit Wan for making quality control a priority. A lesser filmmaker would have farmed out the project to a protégé with limited talent and raked in a boatload of executive producer cash for doing minimal work. Wan once again stays engaged, and helps his cause with some excellent hires.

(download Insidious: Chapter 2) - Much like "The Conjuring," the camera work becomes more urgent and threatening as the horror builds, as if one of the demons is handling the cinematography. Joseph Bishara's piano-heavy score is appropriately menacing and ties into the plot in a subtle but meaningful way. (Insidious: Chapter 2 download)

(download Insidious: Chapter 2 movie) - Production design is vital for a good horror film, and Jennifer Spence does some exemplary work. Even if there wasn't a single ghostly presence in this film, the green and black paisley wallpaper would have brought chills to the steeliest moviegoer.(download Insidious: Chapter 2)

(download Insidious: Chapter 2 movie) The extra effort extends to some of the actors, particularly Patrick Wilson, who is convincing as the possessed dad. Barbara Hershey is the resourceful Grandma Lambert. And the people playing evil spirits actually have to act, since Wan shuns computer effect demons in favor of real people with too much lipstick and not enough melatonin. Linda Blair would be proud. (download Insidious: Chapter 2)

None of the above should make us look forward to "Insidious: Chapter 3." (Which will have to come after Wan directs "Fast & Furious 7," and, presumably, "The Conjuring 2.")(Insidious: Chapter 2 download)

But if we must live with unnecessary sequels, it's always better when
